Re-acquaintance with Spirit
Lessons – Re-acquaintance with Spirit
Jim Montrose, Ayurvedic Health Consultant, February 2019.
Recently I worked with a patient with a severe chronic illness and most of the interventions with breath work, meditation and Gerson therapy could not be applied in her stage of dealing with the disease. I have had some in the past that were hard to reset onto the alkalinizing but blander Gerson diet and had forged ahead. This time it didn’t work and I had to step back. Her journey seemed to be less the physical detoxification, shrinking of the tumor and restoration of the physical functioning, although that is needed, but rather the deeper convoluted journey of the dark night facing the old beliefs, fears, societal roles that become the tyrant of the constrained life in opposition to the freedom and joy of our true passions and purpose. This journey to the re-acquaintance with spirit is the journey that is so often required in re-balancing a life lived meeting the desires, challenges, obligations and multiple roles we take on in modern life.
At times, I have gotten so involved in keeping the hamster wheel of my life turning with its trappings of success: jobs, friends, family, cars, home and privilege that I have forgotten or ignored the more fundamental need deep down inside myself for a deep fulfilled connection with my own spirit. I often glimpse this old and vital friend with a piece of music, a beautiful picture, time in nature in the mountains or the seashore or with a sunrise or sunset but more often modern life is so unfulfilled at the deep level of spirit that I just hunker down at work and don’t even realize the loss.
In confronting my own major health challenge and the fear of loss of mobility a few years ago; I found outer physical activities of busyness lacking and came to a desire to let go of the activity to find myself again as a whole body, mind, emotion, and spirit. How did I know I was on my path: I went inside often, wherein the supreme self resides, and connected with my wiser broader self. I learned to trust that wise inner knowing that I knew when I was young and had wonder and awe of the magnificence of life around me as a baby. I didn’t wish to go back to that more carefree, protected and supported time of a baby and young boy – but instead to bring that connection and trust in life forward to my present moment of life and act on its constant guidance. I found I had the best solution for my fulfilled life right inside, no one else can know it as my inner self (my spirit) does. I choose to make the hard decisions, to find and live a new life filled with fulfillment, bliss, and harmony. It took in my case some dedicated yoga practice to reconstruct my physicality with life over several years and intense inner work looking at the loss of connection and learning to reconnect, trust my inner spirit and develop a new set of beliefs and values for my life that met my true desires and values. I took the chance and made the changes which led me to remember my authentic self where I pleased myself first and stayed aligned with my purpose and Spirit rather than outer societal constraints and norms.
Don’t shy away from the hard tests and difficulties; these are what force all of us to develop the true meddle of our lives and provide the value we bring back from the journey. The journey to re-acquaintance with Spirit is one of the most fulfilling we can make. The gifts and learning that not only inspires our own lives and can create healing and a fulfilled life but that can also influence others around us.
Next month, I will examine the journey to the four directions that this patient launched me on. It led me to examine and develop a broader view of delivering meditation and Gerson care giving to our patients and in instructing the patient and their care givers in continuing the process at home.
