21 day clean, purge, balance

31 March 2020 Day 5 (Clean 5) – Self-care: Cleaning health tips
Welcome to Day 5 (Clean 5), – Self Care – Breath and Exercise, Inspire and Move your way to longevity.
Exercise and Breath work are two vital dimensions for bringing more energy and liveliness to our lives and directly influences our longevity. It is great to develop a daily short routine of movement that keeps you in shape and breath work to increase long capacity and slow the breath each morning. Performing it twice a day can even impact the body more profoundly.
A great breath work program that takes a minimal amount of time is to perform 10-12 complete yogic ujjiya breaths. This is performed by partially closing the glottis at the back of the throat producing a little back pressure and placing the breath in the throat. Breathe in through the nose and breathe out through the nose for the same length of time for a basic breath. If it feels good and is not forced add a short hold in between the in and out breath and between the out and in breath (do not strain). Perform these slowly with attention to filling both the belly and the chest gradually expanding your capacity and slowing the breath.
To this we can add the vagus breathing technique explained previously in Clean 3 (link) to improve breath, release stress, activate the para-sympathetic response and lower blood pressure. These practices are like washing and cleaning the mind and help release old memories and emotions. If you are very anxious or stressed the alternate nostril breath is a great help, do it whenever you feel the need. Simply close the left nostril with your finger breath in through the right nostril; hold for the same length as you breathed in; then breath out (same length of time) through the left nostril holding right; hold breath for same time; then breath in through left nostril; hold for same time; and breath out through right nostril; and hold. This completes one cycle continue for 8-12 cycles.

A great and short exercise program that can be done in 10-15 minutes and exercises 96% of the joints in the body is the Sun Salutation. Grab a diagram at the office if you do not already have it. The steps are as follows sore … click on read more below to read the remainder of the article.

Take Away (Clean 5): Energize and Inspire yourself for longevity with movement and breath each day.

21 Day Clean 4

21 day clean, purge, balance

30 March 2020 Day 4 (Clean 4) – Self-care: Cleaning health tips

Welcome to Day 4 (Clean 4), – Self Care – Tongue, Ear and Nostrils conduits to a clear brain and health.
Most of us follow a morning routine of brushing our teeth, blowing our noses, and washing to throw off the night and last vestiges of sleep. Ayurveda has always considered this an important self-care step to refresh the senses, protect the openings of the body and ensure health. Not only does it recommend brushing our teeth to get rid of the accumulation of secretions from digestion and the night, but recommends tongue scraping that removes any undigested food toxins and stimulates nerves and channels that keep digestion and taste working properly. If you don’t have a tongue scraper simply brushing the tongue vigorously stimulates these points and clears the tongue.

Nasaya is cleansing of the nose to remove build-ups of mucus and involves introducing a mild saline solution into the nose which is snuffed in and expelled through the other nose or mouth. A simple method that provides most of the benefits is to simply cup your hand in the shower filling it with water, snuffing it into the nose and expelling it. This cleans the nose and refreshes it. A little oil can be applied to the little finger and inserted into the nose to lubricate the nostril during self-message which will lubricate and create a protective membrane for these sensitive tissue. This is known in Ayurveda to clean, protect, and maintain smell as well as removes certain toxins from the brain and increase brain clarity. When accompanied with Vagus nerve breathing (see clean 3) it provides many health benefits, reduces stress, and increase Prana (an element of life force) absorption.

Many people remove excess ear wax and dirt from the ears with a cotton swap (careful of ear drum) in the morning which keeps the ear openings clean and functioning. Ayurveda like to occasionally perform more complete wax removal with candling or similar practices and recommends the application of a little oil with your morning self-message to seal the opening and protect the tissues.

Try this for 21 days to see the effects first hand. Continue the practices from day 1 and 2 for the entire program to fully experience the benefits.

Take Away (Clean 4): Hypercharge health with tongue, nostril and ear cleaning – clear brain and senses.

21 Day Clean 3

21 day clean, purge, balance
29 March 2020 Day 3 (Clean 3) – Self-care: Cleaning health tips

Welcome to Day 3 (Clean 3), – Self Care – Importance of Sleep. Zaida got the importance of sleep on Friday as she found herself on a free afternoon feeling sleepy and actually surrendering to the urge to nap. She remarked I feel so tired; I now realize the importance of proper rest and often don’t allow that to myself. This gave me the opportunity to do a self-inventory of my sleep; and I realized I have been quite tired and need and want more rest that I am also giving to myself during our 21 day home retreat.

Modern science says we all need about 7-9 hours of sleep to be really rested and most of us in modern times are lacking this by a significant amount. Ayurveda has recommended we sleep as dark approaches and wake at dawn or earlier. The Nobel Prize in medicine, 2017, reaffirmed this important principle as the circadian rhythms were recognized for their importance in retaining our health and vigor. Essentially our best sleep for cell rejuvenation and replacement occurs in sleep cycles 3 and 4 which occur in the first four hours of sleep and is optimal from 10 pm to 2 am. The next four hours of sleep moves to REM cycles (replacing sleep cycles 3 and 4) which help file and sort the day’s experiences leaving the brain un-cluttered. Waking a little before or at sunrise makes use of the active period of body expression (Vata in Ayurveda) where we are more mobile and active and wakeful. Waiting till sunrise and the next four hours is a slower, sluggish and sleepy period (Kapha) and you may find it is harder to get going.

Make a pact to test the effects of early to bed before 10 pm and wake near sunrise for eight hours or more sleep over the next 21 days and get the best sleep possible. Medical science has found the vagus breath can help you sleep if you have a mild insomnia (might take several nights to kick in). To do vagus breathing: breathe deeply through the nose for a count of four, hold for count of two, breathe out for a count of four through the nose, and repeat for 8-12 cycles. Repeat as needed.

Try this for 21 days to see the effects first hand. Continue the practices from day 1 and 2 for the the entire program to fulling experience the benefits.

Take Away (Clean 3): Luxuriously sleep (in bed by 10am and wake at sunrise) to maximize health and vigor.

21 Day Clean 2

March 27, 2020/0 Comments/in awareness/consciousness, Ayurveda, Dr Rivene, Dr. Rivene and Jim Montrose, food, wellness/by Jim Montrose

21 day clean, purge, balance
28 March 2020 Day 2 Self-care: Cleaning health tips
Welcome to Day 2, the body thrives with a full body Abhayanga or self-message every morning. The process of messaging yourself stimulates the skin, blood vessels, tissues, lymphatic system, and invisible anatomy channels (meridians or nadi’s). It continues the body’s detoxification and cleansing both internally and through the skin itself. It also wakes up the whole body and mind gently stimulating organs and senses to a joyful or even blissful state.
How to do a self massage: take a small amount of oil (if you know your Ayurvedic type use sesame for Vata, coconut oil for Pitta, and Olive or do dry skin brushing for Kapha) and rub briskly into the scalp and rub along the crown from front to back and front, the back of head, the back neck area, and along the perimeter of the crown. Continue on the face with more above the eyes along the sides of the eyes and down to ears and front of neck, along the sides of the nose draining the sinuses, and around the mouth. With more oil continue down each shoulder and arm moving lengthwise on the muscles and circular around the joints, work the palm and the webs between the fingers. Proceed to the chest and go circular around the breasts massaging deeply, under the armpit stimulate and knead the lymphatic’s, continue down the sides, and then work the belly and diaphragm in a circular motion releasing tension and emotion. From here continue down the front and back of the pelvis and massage the buttocks and genital regions well. Continue down each leg like you did for the arms and generously massage each ankle and work the bottom of the foot where a mini-map of all organs resides and are stimulated with massage. Be sure to press deeply between the toes and stimulate the webs. Finish your massage by holding the having-ness (or receiving) gate four fingers below the left palm by squeezing it with the right thumbs on the veins and the right fingers on the outer arm. Squeeze and hold while doing three deep complete breaths. Relax and enjoy. Please note this should flow from one section to the next relatively quickly and takes about 5 minutes total.
Try this for 21 days to see the effects first hand.

Take Away: Joy start your body and lymphatic’s with a self message each morning.
Enjoy your Cleanse,

21 Day Clean 1

March 26, 2020/0 Comments/in awareness/consciousness, Ayurveda, Dr Rivene, Dr. Rivene and Jim Montrose, food, wellness/by Jim Montrose

21 day clean, purge, balance
27 March 2020 Day 1 (Clean 1) Self-care: Cleaning health tips

Welcome to Day 1 (Clean 1), the miraculous design of human digestion includes a natural detoxification period every day. The body is designed to assimilate food, absorb nutrients, and detoxify waste materials every day. And there is a natural cycle to this process. The first 8 hour cycle starts with the intake of food for assimilation roughly from 10 am to 6 pm each day. It then proceeds to breaking the food down into the components for absorption and utilization in the body from the last meal of the day roughly 6 pm to 2 am in the morning. The last phase is the removal of waste material or the body’s natural detoxification through the gastro-intestinal system, breath, and skin. If you are paying attention this means we should eat mostly from 10 am to 6 pm and not eat from 6 pm till morning (perhaps 10 am for best removal of wastes).  This is a little different than what most of us do, yet honors the body’s rhythm and results in better digestion (it following the science of Ayurveda, Natural Hygiene, and many other medical systems that integrate body, mind whole person practices).

So what should we do in the morning if we are not eating a big South African breakfast?

Start the day off with a cup of warm water and lemon. This helps flush the bowels and encourages the detoxification that is going on. It should help you have your first bowel movement of the day and let go of waste water. Clean the whole body (shower, brush, etc.). Then when you are ready eat a light breakfast of high water content foods (like fresh squeezed fruit or vegetable juices, fruit, oatmeal soaked overnight, etc.). Wait until 11 or twelve when the digestive fire is highest for concentrated foods.

Try this for 21 days to see the effects first hand.

Take Away: Clean 1 – Start the day with lemon and warm water and eat light high water content foods until 11-12 noon.

Happy Foods

Happy Foods –
Bringing true pleasure and balance back into our foods
by Jim Montrose, Ayurvedic Specialist, March 2020

For most of us we no longer just eat to survive, but instead eat for pleasure.  Yet today with the changes in our food, preparation and diet we often miss the pleasure we are expecting. An apple I used to eat in the past that was hard, crunchy, aromatic and bounding with flavor as the juice exploded from its flesh; is now mushy, mealy, less flavorful, less sweet, and sometimes less juicy.

As a compensation for this lack of nutrient flavor, wellness and health in our food supply we have now created extravagantly flavored sauces, added sugar, salt, and flavor enhancers to our foods. Fast foods and junk foods with these artificial enhancers and empty calories abound but only give a semblance of pleasure that is short lasting.

And the trouble is…

Those foods aren’t satisfying us at a deep level and often leave us unsatisfied and in the famine state which encourages us to eat more empty calories and junk that doesn’t provide the basic nutrients we need and doesn’t satisfy our taste buds long term. They’re just activating the dopamine reward centers in our brains fooling us into a false satiety.

In the long term, poor eating habits exasperate the situation which most of us feel at a deep level of knowing.

Degrading health, obesity, loss of energy, dopamine crashes, physical limitations, depleted nutrient reserves, constant snacking … don’t make us happy. They may even create a level of depression that we learn to survive with in modern life.

There are solutions that can help us reclaim our pleasure in eating and increase our health and wellness at the same time. Replacing them with whole, natural, and healthy foods that naturally give true satiety is a first step.

We can choose foods that enhance our well-being, elevate our moods, increase our immune system, have broader nutrient values (replacing processed and nutrient –sterile foods) and add foods that replace some of the depleted nutrients that lead to poor health and depression while increasing joy. Coupling this with preparing our foods in ways that conserve the nutrients, concentrate the nutrients, and provide them in tasty, exciting ways that meet our unique body’s constitutional needs we can create Happy foods that do us well, satisfy hunger, and increase pleasure in eating. Tapping Course and Tips

Tapping Course and Tips: Dive Deep and release subconscious blocks with Tapping Experts.
Jim Montrose, February 2020

Have you been tapping to release negative emotions, to build new habits and beliefs, to replace outdated beliefs from the subconscious? Using tapping between your sessions at the clinic can help you stay on track; create the new habits, lifestyle and health you want. Tapping is your tool to take control and tailor the life you want. It helps you take the NET work you do here at the clinic and take it to the next level.
I have been expanding my understanding and use of tapping recently and have been reading Nick Ortner’s book “The Tapping Solution” which is really helpful. I have found two processes that are very helpful and am also using an NET question sequence (the eye of the dragon) that has taken my tapping to new heights. In addition, tomorrow Feb 24th Nick starts his 12th annual tapping summit with free talks and lectures on tapping from top experts around the world (read down for a link to join for free). These tools have allowed me to go deeper, pull out the root causes of stuck and negative emotions triggered in my life and you can do it anywhere by yourself.
Tapping Tree
The tapping tree is a great way to explore the layers around current symptoms, responses and emotions you are exploring or experiencing. It was developed by Lindsay Kenny and a nice form illustrating this process is available at

Churna’s – Quick way to balanced food tastes

April 6, 2019/0 Comments/in Ayurveda, Jim Montrose/by Jim Montrose

The churna is a combination of Ayurvedic spices that is sprinkled on your food after it is cooked or is used to cook your food so that you have the proper balance of the six tastes for your food. A key to Ayurveda health is maintaining good digestion which is dependent on eating the proper foods that contain the particular combination of tastes (sweet, sour salty, pungent, astringent and bitter) that match your individual body constitution. The churna is a simple short cut that will help you regulate your digestion and keep yourself in balance and harmony.
